Taking Care of your Designer Clothing

No Comments Posted in: Uncategorized | Tags: clothing, fashion, style | January 23, 2012

Plastic hangers, hot washes and 1200rpm spin cycles might be all well and good for a piece of throw away fashion you picked up on the high street, but when it comes to taking care of your designer clothing these are things that should never cross your mind for even a moment. You’ve paid for quality and you’ll want to preserve that for as long as possible. Here’s how you go about keeping your labelled pieces in mint condition.

First things first: never, ever use a plastic or wire hanger on your designer pieces. These can damage the fibres, tear holes in the fabric and cause the garment to become misshapen. You’ve splurged on the clothes already, so don’t be afraid to indulge a little more and pick up some wooden, preferably padded, hangers. This ought to keep your clothes in shape for longer. You may want to spend a little extra to protect your favourite, delicate designer dress and pick up a garment bag of a suitable length. This will protect the dress from moths, dust and from snagging on other clothes in your wardrobe.

Secondly, always pay attention to the care instructions on the label: these aren’t included for the designer’s health, but for the health of your clothing. Never make the mistake of simply throwing your garments in with your normal wash – your pieces may not be colourfast and will pick up the tones from your other clothing. They may also snag on the zips and buttons of other clothes. If you don’t know how best to clean your designer clothing then the answer is: don’t! Take it along to your nearest dry cleaners for advice and guidance.

Follow these simple tips and your garments will become heirloom pieces you can be proud of.
